Small Circles and Big Circles
I was given this book early in my career and very reluctantly started to read it.
Very soon I realised that I loved it!
It aligned with everything I intuitively felt helped me learn and succeed and I’ve used these principles ever since. Most recently to learn how to swim!
In my career curating lifestyles in fashion and design “the story” was central to everything.
In "The Art of Learning," Josh Waitzkin explains this through the concept of "small circles, big circles".
This principle emphasises the importance of mastering the fundamentals to achieve mastery in broader contexts. By connecting the dots to reveal the story.
Underpinning this concept is the power of storytelling—how we understand ourselves and the world, how we create that story, and how it shapes our reality.
Understanding Small Circles and Big Circles
Waitzkin's concept of small circles and big circles can be understood as focusing on the minutiae to enhance overall mastery.
Small circles represent the detailed, fundamental skills or knowledge we acquire.
As we master these small elements, they connect to form big circles, leading to a deeper, more integrated understanding and capability.
In essence, the small circles are the building blocks of expertise.
The big circles are the holistic insights and achievements that arise from connecting these blocks.
This approach is not just about skill acquisition but about creating a powerful narrative that guides our personal and professional growth.
The Importance of Story in Every Situation
Self-Understanding and Growth
Our personal stories shape how we perceive ourselves and our potential. By focusing on small circles—small, consistent actions and reflections—we build a narrative of progress and resilience. This story of incremental growth empowers us to tackle larger challenges and pursue ambitious goals with confidence.
Creating Meaning in the World
Stories help us make sense of the world. The way we interpret events, challenges, and successes influences our mindset and actions. By crafting a narrative that highlights learning and growth, we can turn obstacles into opportunities and setbacks into valuable lessons.
Building a Powerful Narrative
The stories we tell ourselves can either limit or liberate us. A narrative focused on continuous learning and the connection between small circles and big circles encourages a mindset of growth and possibility. This story becomes a guiding framework for how we approach life and its challenges.
Starting with the Story First
In most instances it helps to start with the story first and work backward.
It also helps avoid getting get lost in the detail and over complicating.
Ask yourself: What do you really want? What’s the essence of the story?
What’s the ultimate goal or narrative you envision for your life, career or whatever it is you’re trying to achieve?
By defining the big picture, you can identify the small circles needed to achieve it. This approach helps you stay focused and aligned with your broader vision, ensuring each step you take contributes meaningfully to your ultimate story.
Crafting Your Story: From Small Circles to Big Circles
Focus on Fundamentals
Begin by identifying the fundamental skills or knowledge areas that are crucial to your goals. Dedicate time to mastering these small circles. Whether it’s a new hobby, a professional skill, or a personal habit, investing in the basics will create a strong foundation for broader achievements.
Connect the Dots
As you build your small circles, start connecting them to form bigger circles. Reflect on how these foundational elements interact and support each other. This holistic view allows you to see the broader implications of your learning and growth.
Reflect and Adapt
Regularly reflect on your progress and the story you are creating. Are your small circles leading to meaningful big circles? Are there adjustments needed to your approach or mindset? This reflective practice helps you stay aligned with your goals and adapt your narrative as necessary.
Embrace the Power of Narrative
Recognise the power of the stories you tell yourself. Craft a narrative that emphasises growth, resilience, and possibility. Use this story to motivate yourself and navigate challenges with a positive, constructive mindset.
Chess Masters and the Power of Story
A compelling example of small circles leading to big circles is seen in the world of chess.
Chess masters and grandmasters spend years mastering individual moves and sequences through repetition. This rigorous practice enables them to see how each move connects, eventually allowing them to anticipate and plan 15-20 moves ahead.
By understanding and mastering the fundamentals, they can view the game as a cohesive whole rather than isolated moves, leading to strategic brilliance.
Similarly, the story we create about our learning journey allows us to connect emotionally to our goals and establish a convincing narrative.
This narrative not only drives us forward but also provides clarity and motivation, helping us to see the bigger picture and stay committed to our path.
The Power of a Well-Crafted Story
Inspiration and Motivation
A compelling personal story can inspire and motivate you to pursue your goals with passion and determination. It provides a sense of purpose and direction, making your efforts feel meaningful and worthwhile.
Resilience in the Face of Adversity
When you frame challenges as part of a larger story of growth and learning, you build resilience. Setbacks become plot twists rather than roadblocks, and you are better equipped to navigate difficulties with grace and determination.
Connection and Influence
Sharing your story with others can create connections and inspire those around you. It ensures buy in from both you and others.

INFECTIOUS GENEROSITY.
In a world that often emphasises competition and profit, there's a refreshing and powerful alternative: INFECTIOUS GENEROSITY.
You may have noticed that when you let someone out at a junction they invariably let the next person out. Like the butterfly effect. They play it forward.
One of the most amazing examples of this is beautifully exemplified by TED Talks under the leadership of Chris Anderson, which demonstrates how giving freely can create profound positive change.
By making their brand and content accessible to everyone, TED has not only thrived but also inspired millions globally. Incredibly, TED only employs about 16 people!
Let's take a look at the transformative impact of infectious generosity and how we can incorporate this ethos into our lives.
The TED Phenomenon: The Gift of Free Ideas
TED Talks have become a global sensation, offering a platform where thought leaders share groundbreaking ideas. What sets TED apart is its bold decision to make these talks freely available online. This radical act of generosity, championed by curator Chris Anderson, has democratised access to knowledge, making world-class insights available to anyone with an internet connection. The result? A staggering number of views, and a profound impact on individuals and communities worldwide.
The Ripple Effect of Generosity
Universal Access to Knowledge
By offering TED Talks for free, TED has levelled the playing field, providing everyone, regardless of their background, with access to high-quality education and inspiration. This move has empowered countless individuals, fostering personal growth and societal progress.
Creating a Culture of Sharing
The open access model has encouraged a culture of sharing and collaboration. People are inspired to share TED Talks, sparking discussions and fostering a global exchange of ideas. This culture has made the world feel a bit smaller and more connected.
Igniting Innovation and Change
The widespread availability of diverse ideas through TED has sparked innovation across various fields. By exposing audiences to cutting-edge concepts and diverse perspectives, TED Talks have inspired new projects, startups, and social movements.
Building Trust and Community
TED's commitment to sharing knowledge freely has built a strong sense of trust and goodwill among its audience. This trust has fostered a loyal global community that values TED's mission to spread ideas that matter.
Sparking a Global Movement
The creation of TEDx events, where independent organisers can host TED-style conferences, has expanded the reach of TED's message. This initiative has allowed the ethos of TED to permeate local communities, making the concept of 'ideas worth spreading' a truly global phenomenon.
How to Embrace Infectious Generosity
Inspired by TED's model, we can all adopt a mindset of generosity in our own lives.
What you put out there into the Universe will come back to you in multiples.
Don’t forget that generosity doesn’t have to mean money.
Here’s how you can start:
Share Your Knowledge and Skills
Consider sharing your expertise and skills with others. Whether it's through mentorship, volunteering, or simply sharing advice, generous acts of sharing can have a powerful impact.
Create Opportunities for Others
Look for ways to open doors for others. This might involve making introductions, sharing resources, or providing platforms for others to shine. When we help others succeed, we create a ripple effect of generosity.
Foster an Inclusive Environment
Encourage a culture of openness and inclusion. By fostering environments where everyone feels valued and heard, you contribute to a more generous and connected community.
Model Generosity
Be a role model for generosity in your actions and decisions. Whether in your personal life or professional role, demonstrating generosity can inspire others to do the same.
Understand the Long-Term Value
Generosity often brings long-term rewards that aren't immediately visible. The goodwill and connections you build through generous acts can lead to future opportunities and deeper relationships.
